Level 2 EV Charger Installation Services

Charging your electric vehicle at home on a standard 120-volt outlet (Level 1) is incredibly slow, often adding only 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. Upgrading to a Level 2 home charging station adds 25 to 50 miles of range per hour, allowing you to charge your vehicle overnight completely.

A Level 2 EV charger is a high-power electrical appliance that requires a dedicated 240-volt circuit—typically demanding between 40 and 60 Amps. Installing this capacity safely requires evaluating your property’s electrical load to avoid overloading your main panel.

Hardwired vs. Plug-In Installations

When planning your charger install, you have two primary options:

  1. Hardwired Charger: The charger is wired directly into a junction box. This is the most reliable connection, allows for higher charging speeds (such as 48 Amps on a 60-Amp circuit), and is highly recommended for outdoor installations.
  2. NEMA 14-50 Plug-In: The charger plugs into a heavy-duty 240V outlet. This provides flexibility if you need to take the charger with you or replace it easily. However, under current NEC electrical codes, a receptacle-based charger requires an expensive GFCI breaker in your panel.

We work with all major vehicle and charger manufacturers, including the Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint Home Flex, Wallbox Pulsar, and factory chargers from Ford, Rivian, GM, and Hyundai.

Code, Permitting, and Outdoor Compliance

North Carolina electrical code requires a permit and inspection for any new 240-volt circuit installation. We manage all city or county permitting paperwork and inspect the finished work with the municipal inspector.

If your charger is installed on a driveway, carport, or outdoor siding, we ensure it uses a weather-rated enclosure and proper conduit (such as Schedule 80 PVC or Liquidtight flex) to protect it from moisture, sunlight, and physical damage.

EV Charger Installation Costs & Warranty

We provide transparent, flat-rate pricing for all vehicle charging projects:

  • Indoor Installation Labor: Starts at a $450 minimum (for chargers mounted within 10 feet of your main electrical panel).
  • Outdoor Installation Labor: Starts at a $600 minimum (includes exterior mounting and safety conduit).
  • Note: Permit fees ($50-$500 depending on county) and materials (wire, breaker, disconnects) are detailed upfront in your written estimate.

All of our work is backed by a 1-Year Workmanship Warranty. If you want long-term labor protection, you can opt for our Extended Workmanship Warranty at 10% of the project cost per year, up to 5 years, which covers all diagnostic and service call labor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 charging?

Level 1 uses a standard 120V outlet and adds only 3-5 miles of range per hour. Level 2 uses a 240V circuit (similar to an electric dryer) and charges your vehicle up to 8x faster, adding 25-45 miles of range per hour, easily fully recharging your car overnight.

Can you install an EV charger outdoors on my driveway?

Yes. We install weatherproof NEMA 3R-rated charging stations and enclosures that are completely safe to use in rain, snow, or heat, ensuring code-compliant conduits are secured safely to your exterior walls.

Does my home need a panel upgrade to install a Level 2 charger?

Not always. We perform a load calculation. If you have a 200-Amp panel, you usually have plenty of capacity. If you have a 100-Amp panel, we might recommend an upgrade or a smart load-management device to prevent overloads.

Do I need a licensed electrician for ev charger install?

Yes, electrical work should be handled by a qualified licensed electrician when safety, wiring, panels, circuits, or permanent installation are involved. Mills Electric Co. is licensed under Electrical License #36565 and carries insurance through biBerk Policy #N9BP158903. A licensed contractor can also help you avoid unsafe shortcuts that may create problems later.

How do I know if I need ev charger install or a different electrical service?

You do not have to diagnose it before calling. Explain what you are seeing, hearing, smelling, or planning. Mills Electric Co. will look at the affected circuit, panel, device, or fixture and recommend the service that actually matches the issue.

Can Mills Electric Co. provide a price before starting?

For many jobs, pricing can be discussed after the scope is reviewed. Electrical pricing depends on access, materials, panel condition, circuit length, device type, and safety requirements. The goal is to be clear before the work moves forward, not surprise you at the end.

Is ev charger install covered by a warranty?

Mills Electric Co. provides a 1 year workmanship warranty. Extended workmanship warranty coverage is available at 10% of the job cost per additional year, up to 5 years. Product warranties may depend on the manufacturer.

Can this be scheduled outside normal business hours?

Some service can be planned around access needs, and urgent issues may fall under emergency service. If the situation involves sparking, burning smells, heat at the panel, exposed live wiring, or power loss affecting safety, call (704) 818-7867.

Will the work be explained before anything is replaced?

Yes. Raymond Mills believes customers should understand the reason behind the recommendation. When troubleshooting or inspecting, the goal is to identify the cause before replacing parts that may not solve the problem.
